I started with a piece of 22 x 28 poster board and cut 6 inches off the long side to create a square.
Since I have 10 literacy stations, I need the square divided into 10 sections. It took me a minute to wrap my head around the math! I actually ended up printing the inner wheel, attaching it to the center of the poster board and using it to place the outer wheel lines.
Once the poster board is divided, it gets laminated
and that part is done.
I attach the station signs with tape or Stikki Clips so
they can easily be changed.
I created the inner wheel in using the chart tools
in Powerpoint (or Word).
I hope this helps!

Where did you get the literacy station signs? I love this wheel!
ReplyDeleteI made those signs several years ago. I am redoing them for this year and I can post the signs when they're finished. (maybe a week or so?)
DeleteSounds great! Can you e-mail them to me at leslie.manly@gmail.com??? Thank you!!

DeleteYou are so clever! Thanks for sharing the how-to for this great idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I couldn't get through guided reading with out my wheel!

ReplyDeleteMichelle,
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch! This is a wonderful idea.
I am new to teaching and this site, I am still unfamiliar with how the wheel works for the whole center block. After station 1 do you spin it again? And how to you work in guided reading?
ReplyDeleteOh - I don't know how I missed this comment last month! I hope I'm not replying too late!!
DeleteHere's how I do guided reading and stations:
Suppose you have a one hour guided reading block with three 20 minute rotations for small groups. During Rotation 1, teacher meets with guided reading group one and all the other kids are at the station next to their name on the wheel.
At the end of the first 20 minute rotation, the kids clean up stations, the wheel turns one space, and the kids go to the next station. At the same time, the teacher releases guided reading group 1 to stations and calls guided reading group 2.
At the end of the second 20 minute rotation, the kids clean up stations, the wheel turns one space, and the kids go to the next station. At the same time, the teacher releases guided reading group 2 to stations and calls guided reading group 3.
I hope this makes sense!
Do you only have 3 guided reading groups in your class, or do you only meet with 3 groups a day?
DeleteI sometimes have more than 3 groups, but I only meet with 3 groups per day.
DeleteSo, when you meet with them, do they just miss whatever station they would be on?
ReplyDeleteThey just miss a station when they go to meet with the teacher. They will get to every station at least once a week and usually every station twice. There are some kids who get pulled by the classroom teacher and a resource teacher so they wouldn't make it to as many stations in a week. I don't worry if they get to every station. Most of the time station skills overlap, so it doesn't really matter, just so long as each kid gets some independent practice.
